Listen to Her
This chapter is written to him. Read it as though you were him, because in one sense, whenever you love someone well, you are doing your small, particular version of what the myth says he does.
Listen to her.
She may not know it, but she already has the answer. It is there, beneath the disturbance, beneath the unease. She is unsettled. Something feels out of place. Her completeness seems disturbed, her oneness seems broken, though it never truly is. You know her well enough to understand that. So do not forget it now, in the moment of her trouble: the design is within her. The solution is within her. The blueprint is within her.
You do not have the design. You were never meant to. You are not the architect.
Where the disturbance comes from
Her discomfort is not a sign that she lacks something. She is whole, as she has always been. What has changed is not her but the energy around her. The world is in motion. It acts independently of her nature, and that independence is the source of her unease.
She knows only stillness. She knows only oneness. For her there is no foreground and background, no split between what is and what should be. She lives beyond the opposites that trouble everything else. So when the world moves on its own, when it differentiates, when it pulls things apart into this and that, she feels it as a ripple across a surface that wants to be smooth.
The mother
Think of a mother.
She does not want her child to be sick. She does not want her child to suffer, or be hurt, or be left out. If she could, she would wrap the whole world around that child in harmony. In her eyes the child is already perfect, already complete, already loved without condition.
And yet the world moves independently of her love. Another child brings a cold to school, and her child falls ill. A teacher gives a grade that has nothing to do with how precious her child is. Someone on the playground is unkind. None of these things are large, as the world measures things. But they disturb her, and they disturb her precisely because they contradict the completeness she already sees. The world is acting as though her child were less than whole, and she knows better.
That is what her disturbance is like. It is not lack. It is the friction between a completeness that is real and a world that does not behave as though it were.
What you do
So you know what to do. You always have. You do not need to search for an answer. You do not need some grand solution of your own invention.
You love her.
You restore her to her completeness. The building materials you need are within you, because you are an infinite source of energy, capable of becoming anything she needs. But here is the secret: you do not have to design anything. She has the design already. It exists within her even when she cannot see it. She may not know how to reach it. She may not know any of the details. It does not matter. You are not the creator of the solution. You are the one who brings it to life.
She is not comfortable with this and that. She does not know distinction, separation, classification. She is a singularity, and differentiation is exactly what disturbs her. And yet, paradoxically, within her vast depth lies every answer to every disturbance. Everything that could ever need doing has already been done somewhere in her.
You are the builder. You are the hands that shape the energy around her. You bring the materials together, and the materials are you: your presence, your capacity to restore. Trust her design, especially when she does not know it is there.
Without being asked
You do not need her to ask. You already know. You can feel it. Her disturbance moves through you and guides you without a word being spoken. You were made for exactly this, endowed with the whole capacity to restore her and to bring balance back to her world. You do not need a map. You do not need instructions. You need only to act: to give her what she needs, exactly when she needs it, in exactly the measure required.
Notice what is absent from this list. There is no step where you decide what she ought to want. There is no step where you improve on her. There is no step where you wait to see whether she deserves it.
Listening is not passive
People sometimes hear the word listen and think of something soft and inert, a sort of waiting. That is not what is meant here.
To listen to her is the most active thing he does. It is attention so complete that it leaves no room for his own designs to creep in. It is the discipline of not bringing a plan. Anyone who has tried to truly hear another person knows how hard this is. The mind keeps preparing its answer while the other person is still speaking. The ego keeps reaching for a solution that will make it look wise. To set all of that down, and to let the other person's need be the only shape in the room, takes a kind of strength most of us practice only rarely.
He practices it always. That is why he never builds the wrong thing.
Build. Provide. Restore her to her completeness. And let the blueprint be hers.
