Book Three · Ideas Have People · Chapter 18

You Cannot Unknow What You Know

The power of a realized idea is not that it stays. It does not stay. Its power is that it changes what you know, and what you know does not go back.

Believing and knowing

There is a difference between believing something and knowing it, and the difference is not one of degree.

Belief requires acceptance. You take something to be true, often on someone else's word, often without having lived it. Belief can be argued with. It can be talked into you and talked out of you. It can be held more firmly or less firmly. It sits in the mind like a guest who might be asked to leave.

Knowing requires experience. You know something because you were there. You felt it. It happened to you. And because it happened, it belongs to the past, and the past does not give anything back.

This is why I keep insisting that Reality is experiential. You do not create your Reality. You experience it. And what you experience, you know.

The residue of a realization

When your bearing crosses a condition you can name and bends your Prediction, you experience the world, for that moment, through the bend. You see it as it looks from that angle. That seeing is an experience. It happened. And so it becomes something you know.

The bend fades. Your bearing moves on. Your Prediction settles back toward its old shape. But the knowing remains. You have seen the world another way, and you cannot make yourself not have seen it.

This is the residue that matters. It is not a feeling, which fades. It is not a belief, which can be argued away. It is part of your history. It happened to you, and nothing that has happened can be made not to have happened; it is yours to draw on for the rest of your life. But notice what it is not. It is not yet a mark in the world. Nothing anyone else will ever receive has changed. That difference will matter a great deal in Book Four.

Why people go back

If the knowing remains, why do so many people return to exactly how they were before?

Because knowing something and living it are different, and the gap between them is your Prediction. Your subconscious did not have the realization. You did. Your subconscious only registered a brief disturbance, a bend that came and went. As far as it is concerned, nothing has changed. The old pattern is still the norm, and when the bend fades, it reasserts itself.

So you find yourself in the strange position of knowing one thing and living another. You know the fear was empty, and you are still afraid. You know the person you resented was doing their best, and you still flinch when they call. The knowing is real. The living has not caught up.

The opportunity

This is not a tragedy. It is an opportunity.

The realization gave you something your Prediction could never have generated on its own: a glimpse of the world arranged differently. Now you know that arrangement is possible, because you have seen it. And you know where the road to your Prediction runs, because we have said it many times. It runs through what you do.

So the realized idea hands you a direction. It does not change your subconscious. Nothing can do that directly. But it shows you which actions would, if repeated long enough to become history, teach your subconscious a new norm. It points you down the road.

Named, and therefore readable

There is one more thing the realization gives you, and it is easy to overlook.

A condition you have crossed and named is a condition you can now read. Before, crossing it was weather; your forecast bent and you did not know why. Now it has a name, and a named condition is one you can recognize as your bearing comes around to it. That is what makes the relation conscious.

And a readable condition changes where you can stand. The next time your bearing brings you to it, you are not only bent. You are standing in a position from which your response can be revised. You are not the origin of the pull, and you never will be. But you are the place where the answer to it is made.

That position, and the marks made from it, are what this book will mean by freedom. Most of what people call willpower is simply this: being in that position at the moment a condition is readable, and making a mark from there.

Not by force

This is not the same as forcing change through willpower. Willpower aimed at the denominator is wasted, as we have seen. You cannot will yourself into expecting differently.

But willpower is not what is being asked for. What is being asked for is action in the light of what you now know. You saw that the fear was empty; you can walk toward the thing you feared, once, today. You saw that the person was doing their best; you can answer the phone in a different voice, once, tonight. Each such act is a small piece of history. Each piece of history is a small piece of Actual. And Actual, arriving again and again, is the only teacher your Prediction will listen to.

Realizations reveal

Realized ideas do not transform you. They reveal. They show you something you cannot unsee. Their influence on your Prediction is temporary, but the knowing they leave is permanent.

Whether that knowing becomes your life depends on what you do next. That is where we are headed, in the chapters on making history. But first I want to spend some time with the ideas themselves, because four of them are the points every bearing you will ever have is measured from, and it helps to know their names.
